Gary W. Aycock

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Gary Aycock for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Aycock distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a helicopter on a reconnaissance mission in Long An Province. Noticing a camouflaged bunker complex in a densely vegetated area, he immediately descended to a dangerously low altitude in order to accurately survey the suspected enemy position. After his close inspection of the bunker complex, ground troops in the area were called in to eliminate the enemy threat. Again descending to a dangerously low and exposed altitude, in order to mark the enemy position with smoke for the advancing ground troops, he noticed the enemy troops attempting to evade the advancing allied soldiers by swimming across a nearby stream. Realizing that the ground troops were still too far away to halt the enemy escape, he remained at a dangerously low exposed position and ordered his door gunners to engage the fleeing enemy. Continuing to maneuver his aircraft over the enemy position, he managed to prevent their escape until the arrival of the ground troops. Through his outstanding aerial professionalism and complete devotion to duty, he contributed greatly to a successful operation which not only netted the capture of several documents of great intelligence value, but also resulted in the capture of a number of enemy weapons and two enemy soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
