John D Asmussen

Staff Sergeant John D. Asmussen is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over enemy occupied territory. He has successfully completed many high altitude daylight bombing missions against the enemy. Sergeant Asmussen has demonstrated extreme coolness under heavy enemy ground and aerial fire. He is an excellent gunner and it is due to his outstanding marksmanship and extremely conscientious performance of his duty that his ship has never been successfully attacked from the tail. He has damaged several enemy aircraft as well as probable shooting down two enemy pursuit ships. He stayed in his extremely isolated position and maintained constant lookout for enemy aircraft when the airplane was damaged by flak over Grosseto, Italy and in imminent danger of going down. His interest in gunnery and in his position has led to a modification of the tail gun position which gives several extra degrees of fire on each side. Sergeant Asmussen’s skill and courage reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
