Harry M. Baxter, Jr.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Harry Morgan Baxter, Jr., Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class, United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Gunner of a Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron EIGHT, attached to the U.S.S. Bunker Hill, during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Marianas Islands from March 30 to October 18, 1944. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Baxter participated in bombing attacks against hostile shipping and ground installations, thereby contributing materially to the success of his plane. His skill and courage in the face of antiaircraft fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
