Kenneth J. Birchfield

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Kenneth J. Birchfield, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over Rabaul, New Britain, on 22 January 1944. When antiaircraft fire detonated an incendiary bomb in his B-24, he displayed outstanding courage while helping to fight intense fire and remove the threat of violent explosions from burning bombs and an auxiliary gasoline tank. His bravery and resourcefulness in the face of extreme danger helped make possible the safe return flight of the smoking, charred bomber and reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
