Joseph G. Alwood

**Citation Incomplete and in part reads: For extraordinary achievements while serving as pilot of a B17 Flying Fortress on a bombing mission over Germany, March 2, 1945. On this date the aircraft which Lt Joseph G. Alwood was piloting was viciously attacked by enemy fighters. Two engines were shot out, control cables to the left aileron and left elevator were severed, and the automatic pilot was rendered inoperative. In the face of the numerous hazards and difficulties involved, this officer skillfully maintained control of the aircraft although forced to leave the formation. demonstrating exceptional flying ability, he negotiated an emergency landing at an airfield in friendly territory.
