Lyle L. Bainbridge

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Lyle L. Bainbridge for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 pilot near Duc Lap Special Forces Camp, Republic of Vietnam on 24 August 1968. On that date, Lieutenant Bainbridge provided close air support to the besieged Duc Lap Special Forces Camp. A numerically superior hostile force had surrounded the camp and had penetrated its defenses in one area. Despite hazardous weather conditions and in the face of heavy hostile ground fire, Lieutenant Bainbridge made such devastating attacks against the hostile force their thrust was blunted, allowing the friendly forces to reorganize their defenses and hold out until reinforcements arrived. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Bainbridge reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
