Richard F. Bailey

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Richard F. Bailey for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight from 8 September 1944 to 24 February 1945 with the 735th Bomber Squadron, 453d Bomber Group (Heavy), 2d Combat Bombardment Wing (Heavy), 2d Air Division, 8th Air Force. Staff Sergeant Richard Bailey was instrumental in the protection of his B-24 Liberator as Tail Gunner during his 35 combat bomber missions. Enduring the tremendous dangers of enemy anti-aircraft fire and extreme cold temperatures of high altitude flight, Staff Sergeant Bailey and the 453d Bombardment Group were repeatedly sent forth to deliver tons of high explosive ordnance upon the enemy infrastructure. From oil refineries in Misburg to railway centers in Hamm, chemical works in Leverkusen to railway marshalling yards at Paderborn, his efforts greatly contributed to the Allied ground operations throughout the European Theater by severely crippling the Wehrmacht’s ability to resupply its war machine. Staff Sergeant Bailey’s actions upheld the greatest traditions of the military service and reflect the highest credit upon himself, the Circle J and the Army Air Forces of the United States.
