George W. Adamson

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major George W. Adamson for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Major Adamson distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while in support of the 1st Infantry Division. On 17 June 1967, the 1st Infantry Division suffered numerous casualties, as a result of a Viet Cong ambush. It was necessary for immediate evacuation of the casualties and wounded soldiers. He dispatched ten of the CH-47A helicopters to aid the distressed unit. Although he was participating in a vital resupply mission at the time, he took command and control of the additional aircraft. Throughout the ensuing eight days, he coordinated with the 1st Infantry Division. Daily he took upon himself the laborious task of keeping a continual check to insure that all of the extremely vital missions of transporting men and equipment had been completed. Many times he flew in his capacity as Command and Control from before dawn until after dark, thus insuring that the support his unit rendered was completed. Major Adamson’s outstanding flying ability and ability as Commander are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
