Ward J. Baker

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Ward J. Baker for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-140-A Flight Inspection Pilot at Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam on 13 February 1971. On that date, while flying a combat essential flight inspection mission to commission a Tactical Air Navigation facility for a classified joint operation into Laos, Colonel Baker was continuously exposed to extremely hostile and concentrated enemy fire including both small arms and anti-aircraft. Obtaining the necessary calibration and coverage information dictated flight below one thousand feet altitude at reduced airspeeds and flight patterns which penetrated the Laotian border into areas where ground engagement and air strikes were in progress. The successful completion of this mission required airmanship and devotion to duty far beyond the normal expectations for such a flight. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Baker reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
