Martin D. Alexander

#1) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Four Martin D. Alexander for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Alexander distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Door Gunner aboard an armed helicopter escorting a flight of ten troop-carrying helicopters into an area north of Saigon, Republic of Vietnam. As the formation approached the landing zone, heavy enemy fire from well-fortified positions in the area ripped into the descending ships. Specialist Alexander opened fire on the enemy in an effort to suppress the damaging fire. He continued to engage the enemy with his machine gun and marked enemy targets with smoke grenades. After a quick trip to a nearby friendly base to rearm and refuel, he returned to find that five ships had been downed by the intense enemy fire, and their crews were in danger of being overrun by the enemy force. Determined to protect the downed crews, he again attacked the enemy positions. When his aircraft had depleted its supply of ammunition, he disregarded his own safety and elected to continue his engagement of the enemy from his exposed position. After the last of the downed crews had been rescued, his ship was departing the area when a burst of enemy machine gun fire raked his aircraft tearing away part of the control system, and an enemy grenade smashed into one of the rotor blades tearing a large gash. As the pilots fought to retain control of the aircraft, he continued to pour suppressive fire on the enemy gunners. Specialist Alexander helped insure the successful rescue of the twenty downed crewmen and enabled his ship to complete its mission without injury to crew or loss of his ship. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

#2) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Five Martin D. Alexander for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Five Alexander distinguished himself while serving as Crew Chief on a UH-1C helicopter in support of friendly forces in heavy contact with the enemy near Duc Hoa, Republic of Vietnam. As they were escorting a flight of lift ships into the landing zone, they began receiving fire from the surrounding area. He furiously suppressed the enemy positions in an effort to draw the fire away from the vulnerable lift ships and was successful in silencing several automatic weapons. As the enemy attacked the relief forces, his ship dove in to draw the enemy fire and allow the besieged troops to safely withdraw from the area. Ignoring the intense heavy weapons fire, he continued his devastating suppression of the enemy positions. He remained undaunted as a burst of fire wounded his Pilot in the shoulder and continued to suppress the enemy targets until his aircraft was clear of the area. He then administered first aid to the wounded Pilot during the flight to medical facilities. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
