Gary R. Bishop

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Staff Sergeant Gary R. Bishop for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as the Loadmaster of an unarmed C-47 Flareship over Khan Hoa Province, Republic of Vietnam on the 24th and 25th of October 1968. On that night, Sergeant Bishop and crew were flying a night flare illumination mission in support of friendly forces engaged in a battle against opposing hostile troops. In spite of the great personal danger from heavy ground fire, poor weather, turbulence and having to work in a blacked-out aircraft, Sergeant Bishop continued to launch the heavy flares for over ten hours. This selfless effort under extremely hazardous conditions was directly responsible for the defeat of the hostile forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Bishop reflect great upon himself and the United States Air Force.
