Howard E. Evans, Jr.

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Howard E. Evans for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130B Navigator at Khe Sanh Airfield, Republic of Vietnam, on 23 February 1971. On that date, Major Evans flew three extremely hazardous missions through adverse weather under constant threat of hostile fire to provide vitally needed ammunition in support of Operation Lam Son 719. The airfield was completely enveloped in cloud cover to ten thousand feet. While his aircraft was on a radar controlled approach Major Evans detected that erroneous headings were being given. He immediately took control of the aircraft by performing an airborne radar approach and enabled the aircraft to complete a successful landing. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Evans reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
