Alfred D. Barsook

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Alfred E. Barsook for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 8 April 1945, Lieutenant Barsook distinguished himself by outstanding airmanship and steadfast devotion to duty while serving as Lead Bombardier of the low flight in a mission against the oil refinery in the area of Mienhagen, Germany. Although a heavy smoke from preceding bombing attacks obscured the target, Lieutenant Barsook displayed keen judgment and superior aerial skill, resolutely continued his run. Although his aircraft sustained severe damage during the flight, Lieutenant Barsook determinedly dropped his bombs precisely on the target, inflicting extensive damage upon the refinery. His skillful service and superior airmanship are exemplary of the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
