Carl T. Bauer

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Carl T. Bauer for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot of jet aircraft attached to Attack Squadron Thirty-Seven embarked in USS Saratoga (CV-60). On 2 July 1972, Lieutenant Bauer was an Element Leader in a thirty-four plane, coordinated air wing minefield replenishment mission in a heavily defended harbor in Southeast Asia. He skillfully led his section on an unsupported pre-strike reconnaissance flight through inclement weather into this high-threat environment to determine whether strike conditions were adequate for the mining evolution. He then rejoined the strike group to provide surface-to-air missile suppression during the attack. Due to the exacting nature of the mission, he was required to expose his section for an extended period of time during which he successfully evaded several guiding surface-to-air missiles while aggressively attacking the threatening sites with anti-radiation weapons. As a result of his efforts, the mining operation was completed successfully without loss or damage to a single aircraft. Lieutenant Bauer’s courageous leadership and aerial skill reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
