Walter F. Anschuetz, Jr.

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Walter F. Anschuetz, Jr., for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Anschuetz distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of a search and rescue helicopter. During the afternoon two U.S. helicopters were shot down by heavy enemy ground fire while attempting to locate a downed ARVN pilot. The supporting search and rescue helicopters were able to extract all the crew members except one. Chief Warrant Officer Anschuetz, flying missions near the area, responded to a call from the rescue ship for assistance. Unhesitatingly he skillfully maneuvered his aircraft in search of the last survivor in the enemy-infested area. After locating the survivor he quickly executed a landing. He directed suppressive fire upon the enemy positions as the ship touched down. With the downed crew member aboard, he flew his ship back to the safety of friendly lines. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
