Robert C. Bess

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert C. Bess for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-7A Aircraft Commander in Southeast Asia on 26 January 1968. On that date, Captain Bess flew three sorties into Khe Sanh Air Base, which had been surrounded by hostile forces for several weeks and was under continuous mortar attack. His aircraft received intense hostile fire from automatic weapons on each of his three approaches and departures. The complete disregard for his own personal safety enabled Captain Bess to aid in the orderly resupply of Khe Sanh. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Bess reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
