Charles L. Beneze, Jr.

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Charles L. Beneze, Jr., for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Cai Cai, Republic of Vietnam on 8 January 1969. On that date, Major Beneze planned and directed night airstrikes in support of a friendly special forces camp. He flew over the target area exposing himself to intense automatic weapons fire in complete disregard for his own safety in order to locate and mark opposing fire positions for destruction by fighter aircraft. As a result of his skill and courage the airstrikes he conducted were completely successful. The professional competence, aerial skill and devoiton to duty displayed by Major Beneze reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
