Stanley A Bass

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Stanley A. Bass for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 pilot near landing zone Carolyn, Republic of Vietnam, on 6 May 1969. During the early morning hours, on that date, Hawk 01 flight was scrambled in support of landing zone Carolyn, which had come under fierce attack by an estimated regiment size force of North Vietnamese Army troops. He repeatedly exposed himself to intense automatic weapons fire in order to exact maximum destruction on the gun positions. His steadfast determination and conspicuous heroism against the nearly insurmountable odds of darkness, restricted run-in headings, low overcast with smoke and haze, and intense ground fire were directly responsible for saving countless American lives. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Bass reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
