Chief Warrant Officer Donald P. Batholomay is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Chief Warrant Officer Bartholomay distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a CH-47 helicopter on a tactical emergency mission of lifting troops from Lai Khe to the heliport on Tan Son Nhut Airbase, Republic of Vietnam. Upon arrival at Lai Khe, he was informed that the airfield was under mortar attack, but elected to continue with the mission. With the first load of infantry troops aboard, he proceeded to Saigon for the delivery. Upon approach to Tan Son Nhut, his ship came under heavy automatic weapons fire. After making the second sortie, his aircraft once again came under heavy automatic weapons fire. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States.
