Ervin A. Cogdell

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Ervin A. Cogdell for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52 Aircraft Commander, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, Crew S-01, while assigned to the 43rd Strategic Wing, Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, on 1 May 1972. On that date, Major Cogdell flew as Aircraft Commander of a three-ship B-52 formation which was launched against a high priority target located in an extremely hostile environment. In spite of multiple aircraft malfunctions, Major Cogdell led the formation to the target and, despite the threat of hostile reactions, materially assisted in the successful release of all weapons on the assigned target. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed Major Cogdell reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
