Joseph T. Arton

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Joseph T. Arton for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Arton distinguished by exceptionally valorous action on 6 March 1969, while serving as an Aircraft Commander of an AH-1G helicopter during a combat mission. When word was received that a friendly unit was heavily engaged with a numerically superior enemy force, Warrant Officer Arton immediately flew to the area and began to lay suppressive fire upon the enemy positions. Exposing himself constantly to the hostile enemy fire he continued to perform his courageous actions. When an enemy machine gun position was spotted, Warrant Officer Arton directed his aircraft to the area and neutralized the hostile emplacements. Warrant Officer Arton’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
