John R. Baumgarten

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John R. Baumgarten for heroism while participating in aerial flight. Captain Baumgarten distinguished himself by heroic actions on 27 and 28 February 1967 while serving as a helicopter Pilot during medical evacuation and resupply missions for Companies A and C of the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry who had made contact with Viet Cong forces near Tay Ninh, Republic of Vietnam. Captain Baumgarten made several trips into a very small landing zone which necessitated an almost vertical landing and take-off and was also under constant enemy fire. Despite this hazard he was able to extract the dead and wounded and deliver badly needed ammunition and other supplies. On 28 February 1967, he further distinguished himself by landing his helicopter in an extremely small landing zone that was under heavy fire to evacuate a critically wounded member of Company A. On both occasions Captain Baumgarten displayed outstanding skill and courage as a Pilot. Captain Baumgarten’s heroic actions and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
