Monte G Basbas

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Monte G. Basbas for extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight over Formosa on 1 March 1945. Lieutenant Basbas was Pilot of a single-place, unarmed F-5 reconnaissance aircraft in an element assigned to make a photographic flight over Jitsugatsu-Tan Electric Power Plant No. 1, principal source of electric power for Formosan industries. Twelve previous sorties to obtain the desired pictures had been unsuccessful; he was therefore briefed to cover the target at all costs, despite the hazards of a 1600-mile flight without fighter cover to an area defended by approximately 300 enemy aircraft. Upon reaching the target, he found it to be completely covered by clouds, requiring him to dive through the overcast. As he came out of the clouds he was immediately subjected to an intense anti-aircraft barrage. Although it was impossible to evade the enemy fire, he completed the mission and obtained excellent operational photographs of the entire target area. The outstanding courage and devotion of duty displayed by Lieutenant Basbas during this flight are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army Air Forces.
